Red Record was initiated by a collective effort that brought people together.
Firstly, there was Don Bosco and Leslie Low who wanted to showcase their demo as the TWANG BAR KINGS and Redmund Law who was interested to build a local record label. Lastly, there was Clement Teh who came along who was already a part time architectural draugthsmen that could handle graphic artwork.
Owing to the hardwork of local independant band scene, this gave feasibility for Red Records to launch their first commercially made demo tape. The TWANG BAR KINGS would record their band playing onto a simple master cassette and focused on music writing than recording quality. Bosco worked out the song listing and briefed Clement how the feel of the cover should be.
Redmund focused on his communications with the BIGO magazine, Substation and the commercial cassette tape duplicator SUBMIT while Clement figured out cassette tape finished art for the cover reproduction using a photo copier. All stakeholders were at that time in the army in that eventual year of 1990.
In 3 months, the WITCH DOCTOR Demo was born. Just 50 tapes and $150 later. complete with photocopied cover using green cartridge paper. It was no big feat, but no band at that time had type written words for song listing and credits with green cartirdge paper for their cover. They were sold at the legenary SKOOB BOOKS in the old FUNAN CENTRE. During this time, FUNAN CENTRE belonged to the Urban Redevelopment Authority and was not an IT retail hub as it is today.
In 1991 the SUBSTATION organised the MUSIC BAZZAR and WITCHDOCTOR was sold there together with a short 7 minute tape called JEASLOUS CRAFT featuring more songs by TWANG BAR KINGS, THE PINK ELEPHANTS a filler piece of music by VALENCY. JEALOUS CRAFT was meant to be additional music that TWANG BAR KINGS wanted to publish but had too little time to do so. Only 12 copies were made on SONY metal tape and the cover was the first ever full coloured reproduction cleverly made by photocopying black ink over a coloured photograph. JEALOUS CRAFT was sold out fast.
